Applications Developer at Insurance Commission of WA
Perth, Australia October 2012 - CurrentAs an Applications Developer in the Core Systems team my primary function is to design and develop software application solutions across multiple platforms according to the Insurance Commission's enterprise architecture standards. The Insurance Commission utilises a diverse set of technologies to manage Workers' Compensation and Compulsory Third Party insurance for Western Australia.
I have had the opportunity to act as the Core Systems Manager (team leader) many times now including during the current Core Systems Manager's long service where I was in the role for many months. This included the period during EOFY which is an extremely important time of year for the Finance & Insurance industry. As well as acting as the team leader I have been given more senior responsibilities within the team where I am expected to act as a technical lead on project work, help coordinate development effort.
Our COBOL code base which underpins most of our insurance systems was migrated from a traditional IBM Mainframe environment to a virtualised Micro Focus Enterprise Server environment. Along with developing Enterprise COBOL applications I often work with Java, Python, DB2, JCL, Control-M, TIBCO iProcess/Business Works, and Bash scripting (Linux).
-
Business Services Transformation Project
Roles: Developer, Technical LeadThe project had an ambitious target of automating the payment of select invoices received from medical providers. The system would attempt to apply rigid payment rules to the invoices and if an exception occured it would revert to the manual process but with much of the invoice data already entered into the system. The project experienced some technical difficulties but ultimately proved successful with a higher than expected success rate.
I was initially assigned to the project as an additional developer in an attempt to deliver the project on time. As other projects were started I took over the role of Technical Lead from the Solutions Development Manager and eventually coordinated the production implementation. I worked closely with the Project Manager to prioritise goals and manage the expectations of project sponsors.
